SHIGELLOSIS

Shigellosis is a bacterial infection dysentery caused by shigella is very common disease and sometimes it is taken as mild infection but sometimes very serious. Majority of infection caused by S sonnei,S flexneri

Most serious infection caused by S dysenteriae. Shigellae is a invasive causative organisms.

Disease symptoms starts badly like diarrhea, tenesmus and cramps on lower abdomen.

Diarrhea comes with mucus and blood because stool mixed with these mucus and blood.

E.coli organisms are also caused gastroenteritis. It also causes bloody diarrhea or dysentery similar to shigella organisms.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms are chills, anorexia, headache, malaise and fever.

Engorged mucosa, inflammation and ulcer are diagnosed with sigmoidoscopic findings.

Stool culture test are also done for causative organisms.

TREATMENT

In the case of severe infection there will be treatment of dehydration and hypotension for life saving condition.

There will be treatment done with antimicrobial drugs such as fluoroquinolone drugs or injectibles. Sometimes trimethoprimsulfomethoxazole and Azithromycin will be preferred.
